A showcase kitchen built to be walked through by thousands, and still to work for the family who lives there afterwards.
Open-plan rooms fail when nothing tells you where one function ends and the next begins. The wall between kitchen and living had to go, but something had to take over its job.
The island now does that work, set deliberately off-axis and long enough to read as a boundary. Ceiling detail and a change in lighting temperature do the rest, so the room is open without feeling like a corridor.
